Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born April 4 April 1972. The family was dominated by her grandmother, as a single child. Scott was a student at the Philadelphia High School for Girls as well as Temple University after graduating. She completed her secondary education there while working two jobs. She was hoping to be a English teacher at high school. This dream however, ended up being a short-lived dream when she quit the college after a year of studying and becoming a teacher's assistant. She started her career singing live poetry and performing writing her own material. Then she joined forces together with Amir Quest Thompson, a musician in The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by the two. During the Roots concert, she was spotted as an artist. Afterwards she was able to secure collaborations such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She was also able to gain knowledge of the stage when she was a part of the Canada tour of the Broadway production Rent. She was also the first signing agent for Hidden Beach Recordings.
